YANGTZE GODDESS BRACELET

$ 172.00

Chinese cloisonne dolphins, Venetian glass, vermeil spacers, and 14 carat gf spacers and clasp. The genuine mother-of-pearl oval beads were legally imported in the 1940s before trade in this and other endangered species was banned or restricted. These beads have both a luster (as opposed to iridescence) and opacity not seen in modern so-called "mother of pearl". Photographs do not do them justice.

The Chinese river dolphin or baiji--called the Goddess of the Yangtze--migrated from salt water to the freshwater river 20 million years ago. It has been almost a decade since its disappearance, and is the first species of mammals whose extinction is directly attributable to human activity.  One of the many reasons why a portion of your purchase goes to environmental organizations like Sierra Club.

We show you a picture of the baiji, or Yangtze Goddess, as well as a detail of the Knossos dolphin fresco, because, well, just because it's been around for thousands of years, and remains fresh and beautiful today.
